Episode 022 : Process + The Need for Margin

podcast-deskcape-round-02

This week I’m mounting somewhat of a soapbox on the topics of white space, margin and priorities, with the third letter of the PROCESS acronym, O: Open Up Space.

What You’ll Hear:

  • If we don’t allow space for refreshment to flow and create room for movement to happen, we’ll discover the unmistakable smell of exhaustion along with the shrapnel of ground up relationship on the surface of our souls.  Think: my over-stuffed washers.
  • While hustle invites us to make all the things happen, it’s also a slippery slope.  Because #hustle doesn’t seem to know when to quit.
  • We are human beings, not human doings.  Let’s get this right!
  • As Lysa Terkuerst says, we cannot afford to live life “with the stress of an overwhelmed schedule”, or we will ache “with the sadness of an underwhelmed soul”.
  • We have got to create space to play, to paint or bake or stretch.  Our heart health has got to be – and remain – a priority, or else everything else will slowly crumble.
  • “The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time” Mary Oliver
  • The health of your soul is your responsibility and cannot be palmed off on someone else.  Which means we cannot blame others when we’re weary and overwhelmed.  This is both a hefty responsibility and a liberating truth.
  • Think of the oxygen mask analogy we’ve heard so often – as much as it flies in the face of maternal instinct, put on your own mask first.  We are no good to those we love when we’re exhausted, resentful and quietly dying inside.
  • Waking up our souls – and keeping them engaged in what truly matters – requires scheduling white space, or margin, into our lives.
  • If we want to make a difference in this world, it starts with making a difference in our local community.

While I didn’t mention these two books in the episode, they’re great for this specific topic:

  • The Art of Neighboring by Jay Pathak & Dave Runyon
  • The Fringe Hours by Jessica Turner

Food for Thought:

  • The by-product of a life without margin is stress and overwhelm.  Where are you feeling the lack of margin the most?
  • What can you do, moving forward, to carve out more white space in the difference areas of your life?
